What is "Burbetto"?

The Logo

CURRENT LOCATION: Don't you wanna know. Running around preppin' for my gig tonight!

Wouldn't you like to know?

Just because I'm a rapper, doesn't mean my music is directed at the hood -- that's a common stereotype. My music is directed at the world... Everybody in the industry keeps telling me to pick my target audience and attack 'em, but if you ask me... It's you... and you... and you too. I'm not going to discriminate my audience. If you wanna listen to my music, buy my album, or come see my shows, you're more than welcome to -- you don't need to be in some exclusive group or something. How many times have you heard someone ask someone else, "Why do you listen to them? You're not _____." Exactly!

Also, just because I'm from the suburbs doesn't mean I have nothing to rap about... Damn. So stop asking me, "What do you have to rap about?" I rap about what I feel like rapping about that day and if it's not relevant to you, then that's cool. Thanks for listening!

Haters... I love you!

So back to Burbetto... It's a combination of two words, but it's deeper than that...  But I can't tell you the rest right now.  That'll have to be a later post.  or series of postssss...  and videos.

Are you ready for The Reverse Racism Experience?

OPENING FOR THE GAME Part 2: It's over...

Killin' Drumline

CURRENT LOCATION: Back at my fraternity after the after-partyyy...

I never thought I would walk on stage to people chanting "JQ" at a Game concert!

There were a lot of flugs in the crowd - "fake thugs"... Lots of real ones too -- Reppin' their city to the fullest... That's what's good though. My dude Joby and his girl Kelsi really did a great job of promotion and had the place packed. I went on an hour and a half later than expected which was really perfect because I wanted a real crowd.

It's good to see hip-hop fans still coming out to support their artists... even in this day in age and at this stage in the game.

Major shoutouts to everyone who came up from Chicago Momz & Crew (Aunt Janet, Erica, and her boyfriend), T-A-B-Y, J to the L to the E to the V to the I - 4.5 hour drive -- thanks for showing love. Lastly and most importantly thanks to everyone who helped me throw it down my drummers DJ Webz, Jordy Cohen, and Ross Donnewald for coming through and taking care of business, my good friend and coach Nikki Lynette, all the videographers (Rick, Isaac, & Aaron), and Brandon Mojica with the dope lighting ! Zach Walker at ImFlashy.com - I see you.

Now I know I'm ready for this "Game".

OPENING FOR THE GAME Part I: Judgment Day

Show Flyer

CURRENT LOCATION: Just got out of my last class before the show.

I gotta go finish hustling these tickets so I can keep bringing the heat, but a million things are going through my head right now.

We got all the videographers lined up... And the entire "show". 15 minutes of "show".

A lot of people have been asking if I'm nervous?

To answer that: No.
I've been planning on doing shows all year. When the radio started playing my track, some parts of my career shot up and others got postponed, like shows. I was supposed to be opening for an entire Big Ten Tour (shoutout to K'Naan -- I heard he killed it!), but when I got the text it said K9 so we rejected it - plus my producer didn't think he was ready...

But I am. So judgment day is here.

I'll hit y'all after the show.

"See No Limits. Hear No Limits."

It's a "One Man Show"

CURRENT LOCATION: X202 Technology in Business

Yeah, I'm in class. Fuck it! At least I'm writing at a sane hour unlike my other post or my good friend Nikki Lynette's blog (Sitting Up Naked with Insomnia -- Currently a seven part series! lol)

Anyway, I'm mad ready... I hope Bloomington is too. It sucks being an opener -- having to worry about whether or not people are gonna be there in time to see your performance. Actually, I'm not worried about it... I can't... Cuz in the end, I can't control it. It's gonna be what it's gonna be.

Earl Nightingale taught me not to worry through his analogy of worrying to fog (The Fog of Worry). He says, "A dense fog covering seven city blocks, to a depth of 100 feet, is composed of something less than one glass of water." His analogy goes on to state that worrying needs to be put in its place; while it can blind an entire city, so few times can we actually control the outcome we are worrying about. If we can't control the outcome, than we have no reason to worry. And if we can, then we need to stop worrying and go out and do something about it.

I've seen a lot of concerts -- all genres. Lots. I get bored. I don't know why... I could love the artist, love the music, love the band, and bam! halfway through the show I'm bored off my ass wondering if it's his or her or their final song. These experiences, being the ultimate concert critic, have really helped me design my show.

Without having a budget for my props, people, and giveaways, I am really impressed with what my team has been able to do. I'm an individual with very high expectations so despite being confident, if it's not perfect, I'm usually not impressed or proud. For example, when I show people new songs, sometimes I'll fast forward 3 minutes into the song to the only part I think is "perfect".

The thing about tonight is, it doesn't have to be "perfect". As I learned from the Robert Ringer book I read last week, it's always better to hope for the best, but assume for the worst. So far as I assume, there will be zero people there when I'm naked on stage. Oh, I didn't tell you I'm getting naked on stage? Well, I guess you'll see a video soon enough!

Thank you for joining me because without you, the One Man Show isn't possible.

"See No Limits. Hear No Limits."

Told ya I was getting naked.

P.S. Fuck the dude that kicked my clothes underneath the table and fucked up my go-go dancers routine. I'm sorry girls.

My Single is Playing in Mexico?

CURRENT LOCATION: Finally out of the car after four and a half hours coming back to Bloomington from NBK. and I'm back Herman B. Wells library at 4 A.M. where I started blogging last week. Just got done e-mailing DJ Boogie Boy my tracks for the showtape.

Text message received from one of my girl friends last night at 1:05:24 (the :24 is essential) -- "jake they played your song at a club in mexico".

I know DJ's in pools claim the record is playing in the UK, Germany, Japan, and has spread all the way to Antarctica, but to hear it firsthand from somebody who heard it.. OK... STFU, that's pretty tight.

Now I get to hear spring break stories for the next week :-P while I was at home working on the movement. Come to think of it though, it's cool; Next year I'll be rocking the stage in Panama City with MTV.

As for this year, opening for the Game will have to work... But the way I'm treating this show, you'd think I'm performing down at Panama haha -- you'll see soon enough!

Two days after I posted this, my sister's boyfriend heard the song on his resort in Florida. Meanwhile DMARC found out one of the stations we're on the top request list for with mediabase is actually a sex talk radio that plays music. With lines like, "Let me see your ponytail from bird's eye vision" and "Call you dynamite because you blow me like some TNT" for some reason I'm not surprised LOL

Kobe Joby Obi-Wan Kenobi -- SAY WHAT?

Me & Kobe -- Check out those SICK headphones!

CURRENT LOCATION: Just got back from the Chi... And another late night. If you can't figure out my routine by now -- just check the times these blogs get posted... L-A-T-E.

I was at the studio heating it up and working on my show with DMarC when my brother called me to tell me that the Lakers were staying one more night in Chicago. I'm personal friends with one of the players so I thought I'd make my way over to their hotel after the game. I was waiting in the lobby for him when BAM! out of the left corner of my eye there was Kobe Bryant.

I told him about some stuff I was doing as we walked to the elevators and he wished me the best of luck! Total class act... It's athletes and celebrities like Kobe that serve as perfect role models for up-and-coming stars like myself! Thanks for the great pic my dudeeee...

"See No Limits. Hear No Limits."

P.s. Kobe, your security guard is a prick for getting in our picture like thatttt!

P.s.s. Shoutout to Joby Wright of B.F.A. Entertainment http://www.bfa-ent.com/ for hooking me up with the opening slot for the Game concert! Big ups. And as far as Obi-Wan Kenobi, I freestyled these three names in a rhyme today in the car with TabZ so I tried to connect 'em in a blog cuz that's what came to mind for a title. But come to think of it, I was wearing a Star Wars sand trooper shirt today!  Yessurrrr...

What do your parents think?

The New Burbetto Ladies T-Shirt and Men's Hoody -- So freshh!

CURRENT LOCATION: At a computer... Duh. Still in the Chi... For one more day.

As I pursue each day of my career with an open mind, I've noticed that one question is asked more than all others combined in my interactions. The magic question is: What do your parents think?

I don't know... What do you think they think about their white son from suburbia who attends Indiana University and studied business up until this point in his life becoming a rapper?
Actually, my parents are pretty cool. I give them a lot of credit--I'm a very difficult child. At the same time, I'm pretty cool too. Pretty cool in knowing what I want to do and relentlessly working to attract it. I'm ambitious and focused to the point if my parents aren't on my team when it comes to what I want to accomplish at any given point in life, they my as well be working against me.

Working against me is too much stress... So, support it is. Regardless of whether it is rap, memorabilia, or any other venture I vigorously chose to pursue, or at least attempted to, I think my parents recognized my ambition and realized it couldn't be stopped. Working to stop real ambition -- not the bluffing kind, you know what I'm talking about -- is more difficult than "silently" supporting or supporting your child or anybody else in your life. I love my family, not just my parents, but my awesome sister and brother too, and hope I always be able to support them as actively and passionately as they have for me.

The concept of wanting what I want and getting what I want is selfish to an extent, but at the same time you gotta not only look out for your own self-interest sometimes, especially when you deserve it, but you also can't be afraid of being someone you wanna be or doing something you wanna do because your family or anybody else doesn't think it's possible or isn't supporting you. Trust your instincts, be strong, and don't forget -- "See No Limits. Hear No Limits."

-JQ

P.S. Speaking of "silently supporting".. . As far as my rap is concerned, "silently supporting" with the parentals quickly became your music is getting better to, "I really like that one!" to the point where I think my Dad is actually gaining an understanding of hip-hop -- a day I never thought would come.  I'm pretty sure Dixie Cups is now in his regular playlist... And oh boy... You should see the little dance he does to it. He's even got me doing it!

"Hate is Baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time."

"Hate is baggage. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time."

LOCATION: Upstairs about to go to bed... Still in the burbs.

I am currently writing a paper called the Reverse Racism Experience. I will release it to the public one day. While I was writing, I had to do a little research on the KKK. As soon as I started to dig through some articles I realized at that very moment, I had to watch American History X. This is my second time seeing it...

I'm a big believer in books... But sometimes there's something a book can't do for you. I guess it's like your mind can read and wander off on its own imagination... Reading is an adventure. You're free to interpret it as you please and let your thoughts run wildly. On the other hand, movies give you the visual. They restrict you to the picture they represent. In cases like American History X, we all have something to learn... Something to learn from a story and motion picture worthy of this restriction.

P.S. Shoutout to my dude Drewfy -- Great to see you tonight buddy. Keep moving.. I see you.

With Love Comes Hate: Sometimes People...

CURRENT LOCATION: Just got back from the Glenbrook North Supersectional... About to head to the studio.

Sometimes people
rip on me for who I am or what I wear... But sometimes in life like my dude Kelz taught me on his birthday, you gotta say, "Fuck dat!" When I started rapping, I'm not gonna lie haters got in my ear, but that's because I wasn't expecting it -- the hate. I've learned that if you're successful at anything you do, people are going to hate. I didn't have haters until my track started bumping on B96. As it slowly spread throughout Chicago and into the other markets, more and more people began to get at me like that. With every video that a girl would post dancing to my song -- thanks for the love girls -- there'd be another person unhappy with where they were at in life bring that aggression to me. So on top of fuck dat, you know what I say... Bring it! hahaha BURBETTO!

Sometimes people would meet me at parties... One time I went up to a girl and said, "My roommate thinks you're cute." She was like, "I know you. You're JQ. My friend showed me your friend on her IPOD. I love that shiyatttt!"

Sometimes people are at their best when they're wasted -- hahaha!

Am I a Head?

Ronaldo sports his medal with the original Mercurial R9 cleats hanging from his neck

CURRENT LOCATION:  My basement

"Sometimes people" ask me if I'm a shoe head...  I don't know if I'm a shoe head, but I do know I collect shoes.  I don't follow it or anything; I don't care how much they are or if they're rare or not...  To me, it's all about the look.  Back to the music comparison, it's like a beat.  I've paid $100 for beats that are sick and $4000 for beats that don't bring the heat -- there's no formula.  You just gotta do you.

I showed one of my boys the shoes I got and he was like, "How do you know they're dope if you don't know anything about them except what kinda Nike they are and their color?" -- So I decided to do some research.

SimplySneakers.com and NiceKicks.com (official article click here) filled me in:

"The Nike Dunk Low Mercurial brings the colors of the original Mercurial, which inaugurated a new era in real shoes for soccer in 1998, and lines that evoke the sole and traces of leather and comes to stores in June [2008].  The shoes will sell for about $125.  Like the top tiered soccer cleats, these Dunks also feature Zoom Air. "

It sounds like these original Mercurial R9 cleats were a part of the soccer great Ronaldo's bringing of a new generation to the game of soccer:  one filled with "game striking fear" and "off-the-field antics".  I have chosen to wear the shoes I was given yesterday at my first show one week from today to symbolize the way in which I plan to start a new era and movement in music.

Get ready to "fall into my drumline"

Brand NEW Kicks

NIKE Dunk Low Supreme - Thanks to Jon Stein

CURRENT LOCATION: In the Kitchen... No, not cooking -- unless we're talking Ramen Noodles.

"With the brand new kicks never ever outta style, got her flashing me a pair like Girls Gon' Wild". I forgot how hard it is to shop.. in normal stores at least. I've been in at least 10 department stores in the past two days gearing up and everything is the same in each store. I just don't get it. How is it cool to wear Ed Hardy if any dude or girl with $50 can grab a t-shirt and sport it?

I guess my inner-self has always strived to be different. It sounds misleading... I haven't had to try by any means -- I just don't like doing what everybody else does. To me there's something about seeing something in a store that I know nobody else will have - my uncontrollable instinct says, "Nobody is going to have that....... That's cool." and next thing ya know there are things in my closet that are bizarre or well, different.

It's also crazy how fast a brand such as Ed Hardy or now with shoes like Supras or Creative Recreation reach the tipping point. Not saying I don't dig 'em, cuz I do like all three of those brands, but how cool are they now that everybody is wearing them? I always want what's next!
Price doesn't affect my intuition either...

Over time, I've learned to trust my instinct whether it's working on a track or just buying shoes. It's either hot or it's not. Period.

P.S. Thanks to Paulina at AKIRA in the C-H-I for hookin' me up!

Just got back from New York -- Part 2: How'd it go?

Me and Jermaine Dupri at Columbia

CURRENT LOCATION: Back at my house in Northbrook, Illinoissssss

So I just got back from the Bulls game -- helping out my little brother Alec with our previous venture, ONtheCOURTSports. I'd like to thank Chris Paul for hookin' it up tonight.

In the previous blog post I was focused on the Enuff story and didn't get a chance to thank my people--so right now I'd like to thank Vince Lawrence of Slang Music Group and Heavy Hitter DJ Boogie Boy for taking me out to the east coast and showing me what's good. Boogie, you're a beast! Being so green, it's really an honor to be put on the scene so quickly.

I’d also like to thank everybody we met with at the labels – I would name you all, but I wouldn’t know how to place an order on it! :-/ I appreciate you taking the time to hear my team and me out. Now all I need is a chance because I know once I get a chance, whatever it is, I can smash it! Special thanks goes out to Michael Blatter for taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with us at Mirrorball. And one last thanks to my dude over at HOT 97, DJ Enuff, for opening his arms with hospitality and showing us how New York gets down… I appreciate the shoutouts and all the love!

I have never been so confident in my team and surroundings then I am right now… Now, it ’s time to start doing shows. I just got booked for a couple different gigs random stuff like youth events in the C-H-I, fraternity partiesssss at IU, and ummz... opening for THE GAME. March 24th, 2009 in B-Town. Be there! Shoutout to fam Joby Wright over at BFA on the hook-up.

Boogie and Vince think that Elvis is more likely to hit the stage than I am -- I'm gonna get 'em back for all the hotel humor they gave me for not doing shows yet.

So get ready to put your KICKS IN THE AIR! You'll know what that means in a few months, but in the meantime be sure to buy your freshest pair of NIKE’s because we’re about to get down like thatttt -- especially if you get the chance to see me perform! Speaking of, I'm going shopping for some kicks tomorrow. I guess when you have 50+ pairs of "sneakers", as my boys on the East Coast Strom and Stein would say, a few more can't hurt.

I’m pretty sure new music is on its way too! which is exciting because no matter how essential “Go Down and Show” has been to my young career, I’m excited to see what people have to say about some of this other stuff that’s been on repeat in my car for the last couple weeks.

So until next time, “get all mixed up with a Dixie cup” and get ready to meet a “Super Fly Guy".

Just got back from New York -- Part 1: Who am I?

What's in My Pockets

CURRENT LOCATION: My room in Northbrook

I just got back home from Bloomington for Spring Break and since I just started blogging a couple days ago, I figure I'd bring you back a couple weeks:

So I just had a great first day in the Big Apple... We met with Universal SRC and Mo-Town and we'll meet with the rest of the major labels tomorrow or the next day. I'm chillin' in the W hotel room when I realized I just left my cell phone in a cab. I make a $44.30 hotel phone call (which I got my money back, fuck yeah... who do they think they are charging forty bucks for a five minute phone call?) to the New York 4-1-1 or whateverrrr. Vince (my producer) gets a call on his cell phone that a woman found my phone so we arrange to meet up for it the next day. There's only one reason I'm telling this story: the girl that left work to give me my cell phone was mad sexy -- definitely going to meet back up with her next time I'm in NY -- think she'll see this by then?

By the way, that hotel is dope; the fruit cider that comes out of the water jug is ridiculousssssly good ! If you ever get a chance, just run up to the lobby and grab some. I promise you won't regret it. Don't tell the W I sent you though!

So I'm back chillin' in the room with Vince and DJ Boogie Boy of B96 who helped put the whole trip together and get word that we're about to make a move over to the other side of town. On this special night, Boogie decided to introduce me to his Heavy-Hitter brother, the emperor of the HOT 97 traffic hour, DJ Enuff. It was an honor for me because in the eight years that Boogie's known Enuff he's never brought an artist or song to him... EVER! So for that opportunity Boogs, thank you.

Not only was I lucky enough to receive an introduction, but we also had the pleasure of sharing a great Italian dinner with him. So after dinner, we're back at Enuff's crib. He hears my records out and asks me who I am? What kind of person am I? And who do I wanna be?

The first thing that came to my mind was the greatest artist in the world. It's weird cuz I think about stuff like that so much, but the way it was phrased just put me on the spot. Not that there is a correct answer, but since then, the question has been on my mind. So if I could go back, here's how I would answer it:

The three most important priorities in life are my family, my music, and my future. Thanks to my mentor, Tatiana Kolovou of Indiana University, I understand that these three priorities translate respectively to relationships, creativity, and vision. With every person I meet, I have a goal to establish the first and use the second to create the third in order to then, execute. While execution might be the most important, it rarely if ever happens successfully without the first three.

Over time, family has become more important to me. I guess when you do something the world disapproves of: aka a white kid becoming a rapper -- you see who is really there to support you.

My music is important to me because it's my creativity speaking. It's my voice. It's my life. It's what I live for everyday -- like why do you wake up? I wake up to make music. In fact, I love music so much that my #1 passion as well as previous success being business was overshadowed - I just jumped right in!

The music I create is universal: I'm a college kid who spent much of his time growing up chasing autographs in the city but originates from the suburbs. Now, I live half the time at school, half in the burbs, but most of the time that I'm home I'm in the city recording at Slang -- so... I feel like I'm part of all three in a sense -- and can relate with a lot of people because of that.

People can interpret making music for the general population however they want... yes... Pop music. You can judge, but in Hip-Hop 101 I'm pretty sure Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc were trying to get as many people to listen to them as possible... In fact, that sense of competition, seemed to stir hip-hop whether it was DJ'ing or breakdancing or rapping (MC'inggggg, ya dig) didn't it? What's different today?

For the past few years, I've realized hip-hop is empty. Tupac and Biggie ring in our ears... still. And most of today's stuff... well, just doesn't -- not the same way at least. But when artists come out with new music that sounds like Pac or Big's era, it doesn't feel the same way either. On this special trip, I think I might have found the answer.

The day after Enuff, one of the A&R’s at Interscope who has worked on projects for Eminem and 50 Cent enlightened me when he said, ‘hip-hop isn’t what it used to be… the guns, killings, money, bitches. That was so 10 years ago. A lot of people in the hoods got their kids in school and made better lives for themselves and their families. The demographic of people buying those old hip-hop records isn't there anymore.  Burbetto – I get it -- This could be the next big thing…”

As far as my future, I don't know what it holds... Except BURBETTO!

Welcome to the "No Limits" Zone

Official Blog Logo

CURRENT LOCATION:
Herman B. Wells Library in Bloomington, Indiana

If I am not at the Grammys in 11 months, I will destroy my own career. Yes... These are the standards in which I hold myself--which might sound crazy considering last August I couldn't rap. So now it's been 1, 2, 3... 7 and a half months and yes, I've come a long way.

For those that don't know, my song "Go Down and Show" has received airplay nationally and seems to be having its own fiasco on YouTube.

What started with three of my girl friends telling me they were going to make me a music video because they were tired of watching still pictures on YouTube -- check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N97RvVu3xWo -- became an "I can shake it better than you" debate which led to the SHAKEiT4JQ competition. I've been lucky enough to have 100+ videos posted by girls across the country and from all around the world including girls from the Canada, the UK, and Spain!

Unfortunately, YouTube keeps taking down the best ones cuz they're "inappropriate" -- I guess they don't want a six year old -- yeah, there's six year olds on YouTube these days, go figure -- watching girls in thongs without bras dancing to a song about blow jobs. Did I just type that outloud? I'm going to save one of these so-called "inappropriate" videos one of these days and post it here to show you what I'm talking about.

Anyway, back to my "Grammy guarantee" which will slowly seem less crazy as the months wear on, but if I was you right now, I'd probably press "X" -- thinking who is this kid -- and WTF makes him think today he is nobody and tomorrow he'll be at the Grammys?

A little bit over a year ago, I was running my sports memorabilia company (ONtheCOURTSports -- http://stores.ebay.com/ONtheCOURTSports-Memorabilia) which was "nice" before this recession, when a Grammys advertisement popped across my page. I hadn't really been writing at the time... I don't know... It goes in phases, ya know? Writing that is. But anyway, for some reason, at that very moment, I was bored with life--with routine. I was done pledging (yeah, I'm in a fraternity... Zeta Beta Tau, '11 Full, yessur (at Indiana University btw)).. School was kickin' my ass and the classes weren't nearly as good as first semester.

At that point, I decided I was a rapper. See, I was always a poet... and I've always been into music. I had recorded a track or two joking around with my boys that remained in our day to day playlist about some crazy ex-girlfriend and real "hip-hop", but nahhh... This was different. This was for real.

I told a couple people, who obviously didn't take me seriously... and I slept on it. But for some reason, unlike most dreams we have on a day to day basis, this one didn't go away. I started to write songs... a lot of songs. Songs like thiss:

JQ - 'Bout My Money (T.I. - Big Shit Poppin' REMIX)
http://www.limelinx.com/files/2bc114568c3abfdfb78a5a84c3e9f833-- The First "No Limits" Zone EXCLUSIVE Release.
(yeah, as you can see, my style has changed a lot hahaha... yeah, a lot... I realized I wasn't a thug? "So who am I?" if I'm not a thug and I rap -- that's a question for my next blog.)

I didn't really know what I was doing, but I was further along than I thought and by the time summer hit instead of heading to New York as originally planned, I found myself in a nice learning situation in Chicago with house music legend Vince Lawrence of Slang Music Group (http://www.slangmusicgroup.com/).

But back on Grammy night, February 10, 2008, I told myself that in two years, I would be at the Grammy's (aka 11 months left). It was more than an "I told myself" sorta thing; it was like an oath.

People have been hatin' since so I must be doing something right and as my good friend Jon Ackerman told me the other day, "That's your motivation--isn't it? Proving people wrong... That's what keep you going."

I plan on using a handful of quotes like Jon's inside the cover booklet (what is that thing called?) of my debut album, which I don't have a release date for, but my only hint is that it would have to be before the Grammys next year, if I was going to be there, wouldn't it?

That's "Enuff" for now -- a subtle shoutout with hint to my nexttttt blog. As Lupe told me back in 2006 when he autographed my picture and watered the "rapper seed" Kanye planted in my brain, "Stay Tuned!"
